Tulsa Personal Injury LawyerOklahoma Injury Law Should I Get Checked Out Even if I’m Not Injured in an Accident in Oklahoma?

The Importance of Seeking Medical Attention Promptly

After a while of taking phone calls in this business, you start to see patterns of things that you wish you could just go out and do a public service announcement to everybody and say, quit not doing this or quit doing this if you get hurt. I get phone calls every few days, probably close to every day, of people who’ve been in automobile accidents or they’ve been in slip and fall situations and they’ve gotten hurt and they have not gone to the doctor.

I will tell you that any attorney who’s going to be evaluating that case is going to tell you, go get checked out. And the sooner you do it, the better. Because what the insurance companies look for is delays in treatment and what they call gaps in treatment. Okay, they claim they got hit in this lawsuit and they got whacked from behind. They’ve got all these neck, back, shoulder problems. They have lost wages. They have this, that, and the other.

Okay, here’s the medical records that the other side’s going to get because they’re entitled to them by law. Okay, the accident happened on, we’ll make it easy, January 1st. And they didn’t go to the urgent care or ER or their primary care physician for three weeks. Now, you might think to yourself, three weeks, that’s silly. They make a big deal out of that. And the first time you see somebody and they say, okay, we’re doing this for you, we’re going to take care of you.

Why Immediate Medical Attention is Important

Let’s say, for example, you do go to the ER immediately. What happens is the ER says, okay, here’s some medicine, we’ve done this for you, we’re taking these x-rays, blah, blah, blah, blah. Follow up with your primary care physician in five days. Or if there’s any problems between now and then, call them immediately. People don’t follow up. They just let it sit there.

And I’ve had cases where something like that has happened. And then, maybe a year, year and a half later, the individual’s still having problems. They get checked out. Now we have a year and a half gap in treatment that they’re going to exploit. That’s not fair to you and it’s not right medically. You need to get checked out. And when the people who are the medical people say, this is what you should do, that is what you do.
